Embryo Cryopreservation
Embryo Cryopreservation, also known as embryo freezing, refers to a procedure where embryos are preserved in subzero temperatures in a lab setting for future use. These are often fertilised eggs from in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) or ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) procedures.
After successful fertilisation, once the embryo has reached an optimal stage for cryopreservation, special solutions (cryoprotectants) are mixed in and slow freezing is carried out and stored at an IVF centre for future use. This helps provide more flexibility in family planning, and reduces the number of times needed for ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval procedures.
